Enter Another World . . .
L.A.'s best kept secret.
In the quiet back streets of Downtown Los Angeles, in the heart of the L.A. Arts
District, hides Sweet Smiling Home - warehouse on the outside, palace on the
inside.
The inspiration: Long ago lived a man of inherited wealth who lived to
travel. As a rakish youth, he voyaged around the world, dancing in the
moonlight with Balinese maidens, journeying across the Sahara on the back of a
camel, breathing in the spices of the bazaars of the East... Eventually,
his misspent youth caught up with him and he became old and infirm. Still,
his desire to travel was not sated. He may have ended his days frustrated
and bitter had he not come up with a unique solution to his dilemma.
He moved back into his family's hundred-room mansion. He hired a team of
designers and instructed them to decorate each room in a different style,
from a different country. The décor was to be kept secret from him. His plan
was to move from room to room, spending one week in each. He would first
arrive exhausted from the long trek from one wing of the mansion to the
next. After a nap, he would awaken eager to explore. He would savor the
moment, taking his time to see the sights of every nook and cranny in his
new environment. By midweek, the room took on a comforting familiarity as it
began to feel like home. Toward the end of the week, his restlessness got
the better of him, and he would pack his bags, anticipating the expedition to
his next destination.
At Sweet Smiling Home, you can travel the world in under an hour. Most of us
are too busy to hop on a plane to the far-off reaches of the globe whenever
the urge strikes. But at Sweet Smiling, you needn't be wealthy--or even
infirm - to bring those far corners into your world - your home. |

About our furniture and accessories:
At Sweet Smiling you can find furniture and accessories for every room in the house. We import Chinese furniture, Indonesian furniture, and Indian furniture antique and one of a kind furniture. In addition we produce our own designs of furniture in India, China and Indonesia. We also carry lamps and lighting. In our Los Angeles studio we produce a full line of bedding and textiles from Indian, Chinese Italian, Belgian, and other European fabrics.
We have furniture and small things for all manner of styles including ethnic, contemporary, Asia modern, Moroccan, Balinese, Chinese, Indian, Indonesian, Mid-century and more.
Indonesian furniture: We started our business in 1990 importing Indonesian teak and mahogany antique furniture. Since then, we have set up furniture workshops in Java. Our furniture is built from teak, mahogany, rosewood, sono, and other precious woods. Our favorite wood is teak. Our rattan, seagrass, banana and other natural fiber furniture is of the finest quality. Some furniture built from kiln-dried wood. Other furniture is built from recycled teak. All of our furniture is beautiful quality. In addition to our furniture, we are ever on the look-out for interesting accessories, including Buddhas, pottery, carvings, Balinese temple umbrellas, etc. A lot of antique Indonesian furniture is suitable for the Moroccan look.
Chinese furniture and accessories: After we had been importing furniture from Indonesia for a number of years, we added Chinese furniture to our collections. Again, we started with antique Chinese furniture, and accessories, but soon started producing a line of Chinese reproduction furniture—the Zen Furniture Collection. This furniture is finished with lacquer in a choice of three colors. The antique Chinese furniture is in a number of styles depending on which province it originates from. Furniture is made from fir, cedar, teak, rosewood, and a variety of other woods.
Indian furniture and accessories: Indian furniture was next to be added to our collection. India not only has a rich selection of furniture, but is also an excellent source for religious statues, wooden boxes, Indian tribal textiles, Mexican and Moroccan style wrought iron and too many things to begin to list. The furniture comes in a variety of styles and woods from teak to shisham, to rosewood, to acacia and more. We import both antique Indian furniture and reproduction Indian furniture. Although most of the furniture we bring from India is one of a kind, we are starting to develop some furniture collections. Our first furniture collection is dining room furniture. Indian furniture is very suitable for the Moroccan look as many pieces of furniture have arches and details similar to those found in Moroccan buildings. As there is very little wood furniture from Morocco, and because Morocco is not really a furniture culture, both Indian furniture and Indonesian furniture will create the Moroccan look. In addition to the furniture, Indian lamps have a similar look to Moroccan lamps and are far less expensive.
We are often told that our Chinese furniture, our
Indonesian furniture, and our Indian furniture is the most varied and
the most interesting to be found in Los Angeles, whether it is furniture
which we have designed or furniture which we have found. Our teak and
other wood furniture is well built and well finished. Our accessory collection
is overwhelming in its variety. Generally we sell wholesale and to the
design trade in Los Angeles and all over the country, but we open up to
the retail public in Los Angeles several times a year..
